The Halloway Files · A Richard Halloway Collection

The stories I couldn’t tell on the channel.

Ten Dogman encounters, each told to me by the person who lived through it. They were too dark for YouTube, so I put them in one book.

A word from Richard

Some stories don’t belong in a ten-minute video.

If you’ve watched my videos, you know I don’t hold much back. But over the years, people have told me things I couldn’t put on YouTube. Some were too dark. Some were too personal. In a few cases, the witness made me promise to keep it off the internet.

They told me because they needed someone to know. A cattle farmer in Kentucky. A single mother in Oregon. A trucker who hit something on a back road in Michigan. A game warden whose last report was thrown out. A widow who still has her husband’s final recording.

I sat on these accounts for a long time. This book is where they finally went. I tell each one the way it was told to me, and after every story I add a short note of my own.

Read them at night if you want. Most people do. Once you’ve read them, they stay with you.

  1. From the file · told by Earl Mccaffrey, cattle farmer

    The bones had been rearranged.

That’s the word Earl used. Rearranged. The animal bones were pushed to the edges of the chamber. The human bones — and in the brighter light of his flashlight, he was now certain they were human — had been collected into the center. Organized. Laid out.

    Not randomly. Not scattered. Arranged.

The Den Beneath the Barn

The opening of Story I, exactly as it appears in the book.

I want to be honest with you before we start this one.

I’ve been doing this a long time. Collecting these stories, sitting across from people in their kitchens and living rooms while they tell me things that took years off their lives. I’ve heard accounts that made my skin crawl. I’ve heard things that kept me up checking the locks on my doors.

But Earl Mccaffrey’s story is different.

It’s not the creature that gets to me. It’s what was underneath.

I’ll get to that.

I got to Earl through a mutual contact — a guy named Dennis Rowe who runs a hunting forum out of eastern Kentucky. Dennis had heard Earl talking at a feed store about something on his property. Something that had gotten into his barn. Dennis said Earl looked like a man who hadn’t slept in a month, and when he asked Earl about it, Earl said, “It ain’t no bear. Bears don’t stand up and look at you like they’re deciding something.”

That line stuck with Dennis, and he passed Earl’s number to me. When I called, Earl was quiet for a long time. Then he said, “Yeah. I’ll talk to you. But not on the phone. You come out here and I’ll show you.”

So I drove to Harlan County.

The rest of Earl’s story, and nine more, are in the book.
